Our History: The Department of Family Practice, University of British Columbia established The Vancouver Breastfeeding Centre in 1986. It is staffed by Family Physicians who are internationally recognized for their pioneering work in Breastfeeding medicine. Appointments: Our clinic is a referral clinic that focuses on prenatal prevention, early diagnosis and management of lactation and breastfeeding problems amongst mothers and babies. Breastfeeding problems need urgent attention and patients can be seen without delay. Ask your physician or midwife to arrange an appointment. The Medical Services Plan of British Columbia covers the costs. A breastfeeding consultation takes about one hour and includes a careful history and examination. We will watch breastfeeding. After making a diagnosis we offer practical, common sense advice to help solve the problem. We recognize that each mother and baby is unique and our advice may differ from patient to patient. Return appointments are usually necessary until the problem has resolved. Please remember to bring a hungry baby to the appointment. We teach medical students and residents evidence based breastfeeding medicine to ensure that the Doctors of tomorrow are knowledgeable and have practical skills to help their patients. We do research to expand our knowledge in breastfeeding. |
